The Big Five Safaris

The term Big Five Africa originally referred to the most challenging animals to hunt on foot, but today it symbolizes the most awe-inspiring wildlife experiences you can have on a safari. Whether it’s the quiet power of a lion emerging at dusk, the commanding presence of a bull elephant, or the elusive beauty of a leopard hidden in the trees, witnessing the Big 5 safari animals — lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhino — is the dream of many travelers.

A Big 5 safari in Africa offers more than a checklist; it’s a journey into some of the continent’s most dramatic landscapes, from the golden plains of the Masai Mara to the rugged beauty of the Serengeti and the hidden corners of private conservancies. These majestic creatures are often seen together with other wildlife, creating moments that are both humbling and unforgettable. Whether you’re planning your first African safari or seeking a deeper connection with the wild, a Big Five safari is the perfect place to begin.

Where to See the Big 5 in East Africa

A Big 5 safari is a trip focused on seeing five of Africa’s most well-known animals: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino. These animals are called the “Big 5” because they were once considered the hardest to track on foot — today, they’re simply the most exciting to see on a game drive.

Here’s what a typical day looks like:

  • Early Morning Drive (around 6 AM): Start the day with a game drive while animals are most active. This is a good time to spot predators like lions or leopards.
  • Late Morning: Return to camp or lodge for breakfast and some rest.
  • Midday Break: Most animals rest during the heat, so guests relax, have lunch, and enjoy the camp.
  • Afternoon Drive (around 3:30 PM): Head out again to find more wildlife before sunset.
  • Evening: Enjoy dinner and relax. Some lodges offer short night drives to spot animals that come out after dark.

The Big 5 Animals: Species Breakdown

Easily found in both Kenya and Tanzania, lions are social cats often seen in prides. Best parks: Masai Mara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro.

The largest land mammal. Amboseli and Tarangire are particularly famous for large tuskers and close elephant encounters.

Common in all major parks. Often seen in large herds, sometimes near waterholes or open plains.

Solitary and secretive, often spotted in trees. Excellent sightings in the Masai Mara, Serengeti, and Lake Nakuru.

Both black and white rhinos can be found. Top locations include Lake Nakuru, Ngorongoro Crater, and Lewa Conservancy (Kenya).

Where to Go for the Best Big 5 Safari in Africa from the US

Not all safaris are created equal — and if spotting the Big Five safari animals is your top goal, some destinations stand out more than others. The best Big 5 safaris combine wildlife density, experienced guides, and landscapes that feel straight out of a nature documentary.

Here are some of the top Big 5 safari locations in East Africa:

Whether you’re after a short trip or a multi-country safari circuit, our team helps you choose the best route based on your travel style, time of year, and the kind of wildlife moments you want to remember forever.

Best Time to Go for a Big 5 Safari from the US

The best time for a Big 5 safari from the US is during Africa’s dry seasons — typically June to October — when wildlife is easier to spot around waterholes and open plains. This period offers the highest chance of seeing all five animals: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino. If you’re planning around school holidays or summer travel, this season aligns well with US vacation schedules. While safaris run year-round, the dry months give you the clearest views and most action-packed game drives across popular regions like Kenya and Tanzania.
