Semuliki Wildlife Reserve is one of the oldest wildlife reserves in Uganda and the only area with lowland tropical forest in East Africa. The reserve is primarily occupied by the Ituri forest, which extends from the eastern parts of Congo, following the Congo Basin.

What is it known for? 

Semuliki Wildlife Reserve is known for its diverse wildlife and birdlife. It is the best destination for wildlife & birding safaris, attracting tourists worldwide. 

The reserve hosts 53 mammals, 27 of which are large mammals and 11 endemics to the park. Among the endemic animals include the;

  • Location: It is located on the floor of the western arm of Rift Valley in Bwaba County, far western Uganda
  • Area: Lies in an area of 220 sq. km
  • Altitude: 670 – 760m above sea level
  • Climate: There is no genuine dry season at Semuliki Wildlife Reserve. The rains there are unpredictable
  • However, there are 2 separate wet seasons: March-May & August – November.
  • Temperatures: The temperatures during daytime is approximately 30°C/86°F, while the nighttime temperature is around 18°C/64°F

Wildlife

Hot Springs

Hot Springs are Semliki Wildlife Reserve’s prominent attractions. The reserve has two hot springs—female and male. The male hot spring is named Bitende, and it covers a diameter of 12 meters. The female hot spring is named Nyasimbi, and it spurts hot bubbling water that streams about 2 meters up, giving a beautiful view.

The water from these hot springs is so hot (100 degrees Celsius) that tourists boil eggs and potatoes there.

Scenery

Semliki Wildlife Reserve is in the Albertine Rift Valley. It is set between the Rift Valley escarpment on the east, the Congolese Blue Mountains on the West, and the Rwenzori on the South. This position makes the Semliki Wildlife Reserve safari a worthwhile experience with scenic views.

The park’s dominant vegetation is woodland and Savannah dotted with patches of Borassus palms. Several rivers run through the park, all flanked by riverine forests.

Tree Species

The Wasa and Mugiri rivers in the park support 30 – 50 m tall gallery forests in 50 – 250 m broad areas. The gradual shifting from the gallery forest to grassland is sudden and picturesque.

Visiting Hot Springs

Semuliki Wildlife Reserve has two male and female hot springs: Bitende and Nyasimbi. The hot springs have temperatures of up to 100 degrees Celsius. Hike to Nyaburogo Gorge

Nyaburgo Gorge is an excellent birding trail in Semuliki Wildlife Reserve. The trail has a variety of environments, including grassland, woodland, and canyon forest.

On this hiking trail, tourists have birdwatching and photography opportunities. The commonly seen birds are the Arrow-marked Babbler, Tropical Boubal, Black-headed Bushrike, and Luhdrers Bushrike. Tourists also see primates such as Black and White Colobus, Baboons, vervets, and, on rare occasions, Chimpanzees.

Game Drives Safaris

The Uganda Wildlife Authority offers game drives at Semliki Wildlife Reserve. The game drive safaris occur in the morning, late afternoon, and nighttime. During these game drives, tourists can spot the following; elephants, buffaloes, waterbucks, crocodiles, and Warthog.

Best Time to Visit Semuliki Wildlife Reserve

Semuliki Wildlife Reserve is an all-year-round destination. However, the best months to visit are the dry seasons of April – June and July—September. During these seasons, the park is less muddy, making driving through the park easier.

The rainy season falls between December and March and October and November. During this season, accessing the park is quite difficult.
