Located in the east, Akagera offers classic African safari experiences. Spot the Big Five, cruise along Lake Ihema, and witness the dramatic landscapes of savannah, swamp, and woodland.

Best Time to Visit Rwanda for Safari

The best time to visit Rwanda for safari is during the dry seasons — from June to September and December to February. During these months, wildlife is easier to spot, and trekking conditions are ideal.

However, the country enjoys a mild climate year-round, making Rwanda a great destination in any season. Just note that rainier months (March–May and October–November) may impact trail accessibility in forested parks like Volcanoes and Nyungwe.

Volcanoes National Park Rwanda: Gorilla Trekking Paradise

No list of Rwanda safari destinations is complete without Volcanoes National Park. This park protects five of the eight Virunga Volcanoes and is home to a large portion of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas.

Visitors must book permits in advance for guided treks. Along the way, you may also encounter golden monkeys, rare forest birds, and breathtaking volcanic views.

Akagera National Park Rwanda: Big Game in the East

Once heavily impacted by conflict, Akagera National Park Rwanda has made a remarkable comeback. Thanks to dedicated conservation efforts, the park is now home to elephants, lions, leopards, rhinos, and buffalos.

Game drives, birding tours, and boat safaris offer diverse ways to explore. It’s the only park in Rwanda where you can experience a full savannah-style safari.
