Mikumi National Park is a wildlife conservation area located in the southeastern part of Tanzania. It is Tanzania’s fourth biggest national park. Wildlife

The National Park is home to a variety of wildlife species, including:

  • Large herds of zebras, wildebeests, impalas, elands, greater kudus, and sable antelopes.

  • Hippos in two artificial pools located 5 kilometers north of the park’s main gate

Mountains 

Mikumi national park is situated between mountains which make the mountains one of the key attractions in the park. The beautiful views of the mountains which have unique formation are a site to behold. The most famous mountain to view while in the park include;  

  • Malundwe Mountain, the highest peak in the park at 1,290 meters. It has three peaks along a ridge running north and south.
  • Uluguru Mountains, is a popular hiking destination for visitors.
  • Udzungwa Mountains, is covered with montane rainforest, Miombo woodland, lowland rainforest, grassland, and heathland.

Mkata Floodplains

The Mkata floodplains are a dominant feature within the park, offering spectacular wildlife sightings, including the Big Five.

Hippo Pool

The hippo pool, situated 5 kilometers northwest of the main entry gate, is a concentration point for hippos and crocodiles.

Best Time to Visit the Mikumi National Park 

The best time to visit Mikumi National Park for wildlife viewing, is during the dry season (June to October) as the animals gather around water sources. While wildlife is more dispersed during wet Season (November to May), it is still accessible for visitors. 

The December to February period is characterized by hot and humid weather, making it less favorable for some visitors.
